Flickering Lights in Your Home?
Don't Ignore It.

Flickering lights are one of the most common signs of a dangerous wiring problem. Spark Doc Electric diagnoses and fixes the root cause — same day when possible. Serving Olathe, Overland Park, Kansas City, and the entire tri-county metro.

What Causes Flickering Lights?

Flickering lights aren't just annoying — they're often a symptom of an underlying electrical problem that needs professional attention. Here are the most common causes we see across the Kansas City metro:

  • Loose wire connections — The most common cause. A loose wire at the fixture, switch, outlet, or breaker creates intermittent contact and flickering. It can also arc, which is a serious fire hazard.
  • Overloaded circuits — When a circuit draws more power than it's designed for, voltage drops cause lights to dim or flicker, especially when large appliances kick on.
  • Failing breaker or panel issue — A worn breaker or loose connection inside the panel can cause flickering throughout a whole circuit or the entire home.
  • Loose neutral wire — A loose neutral at the main panel or service entrance can cause whole-house flickering and is one of the more dangerous scenarios.
  • Failing fixture or bulb — Sometimes it really is just a dying bulb or a fixture at the end of its life. We rule this out first before looking deeper.
⚠️ When Flickering Is a Fire Emergency

If you notice flickering accompanied by a burning smell, buzzing or crackling sounds from walls or the panel, or lights flickering in your whole house — call immediately. These are signs of electrical arcing, which can ignite insulation inside your walls without any visible warning.

When Is It Normal?

Brief dimming when your AC, refrigerator, or other large appliance starts up is usually normal — those motors draw a surge of current on startup. If the dimming is brief (less than a second) and only happens when the appliance kicks on, it's likely not a problem.

But if lights flicker randomly, persistently, in multiple rooms, or without any obvious trigger — that needs to be looked at.

Our Diagnostic Process

We don't guess. We use a systematic approach: check the fixture and bulb first, test the circuit under load, inspect the wiring connections at switches and outlets, and check the panel last. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a straight quote before we start any work.

Flickering Lights FAQ

Why are my lights flickering?
Flickering lights are most commonly caused by a loose wire connection at the fixture, switch, or breaker panel; an overloaded circuit; a failing fixture or bulb; or a problem with the utility connection to your home. The most dangerous cause is arcing — where electricity jumps across a loose or damaged connection — which is a leading cause of house fires.
Are flickering lights dangerous?
They can be. Occasional dimming when a large appliance kicks on is usually normal. But if lights flicker randomly, throughout the whole house, or along with a burning smell or buzzing sound, that's a serious warning sign of loose wiring or arcing — both fire hazards that need immediate attention.
What does it mean when lights flicker in the whole house?
Whole-house flickering usually points to a problem at the main breaker panel, the service entrance, or a loose neutral connection. This is more serious than single-room flickering and warrants a call to a licensed electrician right away.
How much does it cost to fix flickering lights?
Cost depends on the root cause. A simple loose connection at a fixture is a quick, inexpensive repair. Panel or wiring issues cost more. We provide upfront pricing — you'll know the cost before we start. Call (913) 390-3780 for a same-day assessment.
Can I fix flickering lights myself?
You can safely swap out a flickering bulb or tighten a visible fixture connection after turning off the breaker. But if the problem persists, or involves the panel, wiring inside walls, or whole-home flickering, call a licensed electrician. Electrical arcing inside walls is invisible and can smolder for hours before igniting.
