Upgrade vs. Replacement

A panel upgrade is about capacity: moving from 100A to 200A (or 400A) so the house can handle EV chargers, HVAC, additions, and modern appliance loads. A panel replacement is about the box itself: if the service is already sized right but the panel failed, was recalled, or is unsafe, we swap it at the same amperage. If you need both, we do both in one project. We will tell you which one you actually need.

Breakers that will not hold, odd outages, or a panel that is warm to the touch often start as troubleshooting, then we replace the box if that is what the diagnosis says.

When the Panel Needs Replacing, Not More Amps

Federal Pacific & Zinsco Panels

If you have a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel, we strongly recommend replacement. Full guide: Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels. These panels have well-documented failure rates. Their breakers frequently don't trip under overload, which is a fire hazard. Many insurers now require replacement before issuing a policy. Pushmatic and Challenger panels get the same honest look.

The amperage might already be 200A and the equipment still unsafe. Plenty of Olathe and Johnson County homes still carry those labels from mid-century builds.
