Half Your House Lost Power?
Here's What's Happening.

A partial power outage — where some rooms work and others don't — is usually a sign of a failed leg of service, a panel issue, or a utility problem. Spark Doc Electric diagnoses it fast and gets your power back on. Serving all of Johnson County KS, Jackson County MO, and Wyandotte County KS.

Why Is Half My House Without Power?

Your home's electrical service comes in on two "legs" — each carrying 120 volts, combining for 240 volts for large appliances. When one leg fails, roughly half your circuits go dark while the other half stay lit. It can look confusing because it's not a room-by-room split — it follows which circuits were wired on which leg.

The three main causes we see:

  • Utility company fault — A problem with the transformer or service drop (the wires from the pole to your meter) that affects one leg. Call your utility first to rule this out.
  • Failed main breaker — A failing main breaker that's losing one leg of its connection. This needs immediate attention.
  • Loose connection at the service entrance — A corroded or loose connection at the meter box or main panel lugs can interrupt one leg of service — and can arc and cause a fire.
⚠️ Important: Check These Before Calling

1. Check your breaker panel — look for any breaker in the middle (tripped) position and reset it. 2. Look for tripped GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, and exterior. 3. Call your utility company to ask if there's a known outage. If all that checks out, call us.

What We Do When We Arrive

We don't just reset things and hope for the best. Our process:

  1. Verify the scope — We test voltage at the panel to confirm whether you're missing a full leg or just have isolated circuit problems.
  2. Check the utility connection — We test at the meter to determine whether the problem is on your side or the utility's.
  3. Inspect the panel — We check main breaker contacts, bus bars, and connections for signs of heat, arcing, or loose connections.
  4. Diagnose and quote — You get a clear explanation and upfront price before we do any work.
  5. Fix it right — Whether it's a panel repair, service upgrade, or coordination with your utility, we handle it completely.

Partial Power Outage FAQ

Why did I lose power to half my house?
Your home receives power on two "legs" of a 240-volt service. If one leg fails — due to a utility issue, a loose connection at the meter or main panel, or a failed main breaker — you'll lose power to roughly half your home while the other half stays on. This is different from a tripped breaker, which only knocks out one circuit.
Is a partial power outage dangerous?
Yes, it can be. A partial outage caused by a loose connection at the main panel or service entrance can create heat, arcing, and fire risk. Additionally, some 240-volt appliances (like your HVAC, dryer, or electric range) may receive abnormal voltage and be damaged. Don't just reset breakers — get it diagnosed.
What should I do if half my house loses power?
Check your breaker panel for any tripped breakers — they'll be in the middle position. Also check for tripped GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, and outside. If everything looks fine, call your utility to rule out a service issue on their end. If the utility says service is normal, call an electrician.
Could it be a utility problem instead of a problem in my house?
Yes. The utility's transformer or service drop can develop a fault affecting one leg of power. Call your utility first. If they confirm service is normal to your home, the problem is on your side of the meter and you need a licensed electrician.
Why do some lights work but not others?
Standard outlets and lights run on 120 volts using one leg of power. If you've lost one leg, only the circuits on that leg go dark. Circuits on the other leg continue working normally — creating the classic "half the house" scenario.
