When a GFCI Trips

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) watches for tiny current leaks to ground and cuts power in milliseconds. That is what keeps a kitchen or bathroom outlet from becoming a shock hazard when something gets wet or a cord fails.

Trips happen for real reasons: moisture in the box, a bad appliance, a worn receptacle, or a wiring fault on the load side. Pressing RESET once is fine. If it will not hold, or it trips again as soon as you plug something in, stop cycling it and call.

Dead outlets on the same circuit?

One tripped GFCI often kills several outlets downstream. Before you assume wiring failed, see our dead outlet repair checklist, then book if RESET will not stick.

  • RESET button will not stay in
  • Trips when a specific appliance is plugged in
  • Trips in rain or after cleaning near the outlet
  • Multiple outlets dead after one GFCI trips
  • TEST button does nothing (device may be dead)

Failed GFCI vs. Wiring Problem

Not every trip means the receptacle is bad. Sometimes the GFCI is doing its job and the leak is further down the circuit: a junction box, a damaged cord, or moisture in an outdoor cover.

We test the device, check line vs. load wiring, and isolate whether the fault is the GFCI itself or something it is protecting. Swapping parts without that check is how people end up with a new outlet that still will not hold.

GFCI vs. AFCI (quick note)

Homeowners mix these up. GFCI = shock protection at outlets (or GFCI breakers). AFCI = arc-fault protection, usually at the breaker, meant to reduce fire risk from damaged wiring. If a breaker labeled AFCI or CAFCI is the one tripping, that is a different diagnosis than a bathroom GFCI. For breaker trips, see tripped breakers or electrical troubleshooting.

Kitchen, Bath, Garage, and Outdoor

Kitchen

Countertop receptacles need GFCI protection. Trips often track to a coffee maker, toaster, or dishwasher on the protected circuit, or to a device that has simply worn out.

Bathroom

Steam and splash make bathrooms a classic GFCI location. If RESET will not hold after a shower, moisture in the box or a failed receptacle is common.

Garage

Garage receptacles protect tools and chargers. Cold, dust, and shared circuits mean nuisance trips that still need a real answer, not endless resets.

Outdoor

Exterior GFCIs take weather abuse. Cracked covers, wet boxes, and landscape lighting on the load side are frequent finds when an outdoor outlet goes dead.

We install new GFCI outlets where code requires them and replace failed ones in existing homes across Olathe and the Kansas City metro. Permits when the job needs them.

When to Call Spark Doc

  • GFCI will not reset, or resets then trips right away
  • Half the kitchen or bath is dark after one trip
  • You need GFCI protection added for a remodel or inspection
  • Burning smell, warm cover, or scorch marks near the outlet
  • Outdoor receptacle dead after storms

Burning smell or a hot cover is an emergency electrician call. Do not keep resetting it.

How We Handle the Call

You talk to Bobby. We show up, test the GFCI and the circuit, and tell you whether it is a failed device, a load-side fault, or missing protection that should be added. Price comes before the work starts. 5-year warranty on the work we do.

Based in Olathe. Same-day when the schedule allows. Serving Johnson County KS, Jackson County MO, and Wyandotte County KS. See our Olathe electrician page for local service details.

A dead kitchen or garage wall is often a tripped GFCI, not failed wiring. Walk the dead outlet checklist first, then book if RESET will not hold. Broader flicker, trips, or half-house issues belong on electrical troubleshooting.

If the panel itself is undersized or unsafe, that is a separate conversation: panel upgrade or replacement, not another outlet swap.

What Happens on the Visit

We separate a failed GFCI device from a real ground fault on the circuit, then repair or replace so RESET holds.

  1. Reproduce the trip and note which receptacles went dead.
  2. Test the device vs. downstream wiring and loads.
  3. Replace failed GFCIs or repair the fault that keeps tripping them.
  4. Confirm wet-area protection meets current code where we touch the circuit.

Kitchen, bath, garage, and outdoor locations are the usual calls. Book online or call (913) 390-3780.

GFCI Outlet FAQ

Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping?
Moisture, a bad appliance, a worn receptacle, or a wiring fault on the protected circuit. If RESET will not hold, stop cycling it and have us test the device and the load side.
What is the difference between a GFCI and an AFCI?
GFCI protects people from shock. AFCI protects against arc faults that can start fires. Different jobs. An AFCI breaker trip is not the same diagnosis as a bathroom GFCI trip.
Where are GFCI outlets required?
Bathrooms, kitchen countertop receptacles, garages, outdoors, laundry areas, and other wet or damp locations under current code. Older homes often need updates when you remodel or sell.
Can I just replace a GFCI outlet myself?
Line and load are easy to reverse, and a miswired GFCI will not protect downstream outlets. If the fault is in the wiring, a new device alone will not fix it. Call (913) 390-3780.
How much does GFCI repair or install cost?
A simple replacement is usually affordable. Tracing a load-side fault or adding protection in multiple rooms costs more. We give upfront pricing before we start.
